Intel Core i5 655K

6 12 2010

Intel has brought its new K-series, two mid-range CPUs that aren’t priced at Extreme Edition levels – the i5-655K and the i7-875K. An unlocked multiplier provides more options when over clocking, as it’s the relationship between the multiplier and the Base Clock of the motherboard that rules over the CPU speed. Therefore, a CPU with an unlocked multiplier can be over clocked by increasing the Base Clock, the multiplier or a blending of both. This can be an advantage over just over clocking the Base Clock, as your motherboard will no longer be a limiting factor in over clocking efforts.

Core i5-665K released a 3.2GHz dual-core CPU for the LGA1156 socket. The new CPU is based on the i5-650. Both have 4MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 73W, and both hold up Hyper-Threading and the outstanding Turbo Boost (rev 2). GPU of the two chips are also clocked at the same 733MHz. In fact the only substantial disparity between the i5-655K and the i5-650 is the formers unlocked multiplier and the £33 price premium one pay for it over the i5-650.

Solar-power ‘Seaswarm’ robots to clean up Gulf oil spill within 30 days

28 08 2010

Scientists may bring a group of solar-powered robots to mop up the Gulf oil spill within 30 days. The Seaswarm robots are being developed by MIT professor Francesco Stellacci.

Researchers believe that a Seaswarm of between 5000 and 10000 self-directed robots with non-stop working could cover a Gulf-sized surface area within one month.

Biderman said, “We say these vehicles are autonomous because they provide their own energy, propel themselves along the surface of the ocean and therefore we don’t need humans to collect the oil.”

The prototype of Seaswarm robot is 16 feet long and 7 feet wide having the weight of 35 pounds. Two square solar boards at the head shove the robot along the water’s surface. When it moves, a thin and flexible conveyor belt covered by oil-absorbing nanofabric revolves to selectively swab oil.

In accordance to the lab, one robot can run for weeks on only 100 watts having a capacity to remove several gallons per hour. They are also equipped with wireless communications to communicate with other robots.  Humans can also operate one robot using a remote control, if required.

Ron Kendall at Texas Tech University said, “Robotic strategies are intriguing, and they create further opportunity to consider responses in the future.”

Try Office 2010 Free for Six Months

    18 05 2010

Now you can try out Office 2010 for 180 days instead of usual 30 days. You should say thanks to a little-know trick designed for corporate users.  This tool enables systems administration to “re-arm” product’s grace period up to five times before they need to enter product’s activation key. Home users can take advantage of same trick to get them a free six-month trial. Microsoft certify that a short command documented on its TechNet support pages, enable users to reset office 2010’s activation timer before they need to enter 25 character product key. All they need to do is to run a file called ospprearm.exe at command prompt. This file is found in C:\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office Software Protection Platform by default.

This file can be run up to five times. If users reset the activation counter each time then they can elapse 30-days trial period and can extend trial to a maximum 180 days before they have to supply an activation key. The reset feature of Microsoft office is not a bug and Microsoft says it’s aimed at enterprise administration, enabling them to create software images that they can use to deploy operating system to a number of systems over a period of months. The reset technique must be used on a full copy of Office 2010 rather than a time-limited trial, which comes with its own time limited activation code which must be entered when the first software installed.
